Hannes Imhof presentaion on Innovationsraum GAP at Irmengard school

Exciting Insights into Climate Research at St. Irmengard School

OpenScience Lecture by Hannes Imhof (KIT IMKIFU) - 14.10.2025 - 5 p.m. - St. Irmengard School

On 14 October, a special event took place in the assembly hall as part of the public lecture series organized by the “Innovationsraum GAP”. Dr Hannes Imhof from the KIT-Campus Alpin provided vivid insights into current research on greenhouse gases and their effects on our climate. The assembly hall was filled to the last seat – pupils from three schools seized the opportunity to learn first-hand about one of the most urgent issues of our time.

The Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research – Atmospheric Environmental Research (IMK-IFU) at KIT-Campus Alpin in Garmisch-Partenkirchen has been an important centre for climate research in Bavaria for more than sixty years. In cooperation with the Technical University of Munich and the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, science communication in the region is actively promoted within the “Innovationsraum GAP” network.

In his lecture, Dr Imhof introduced the Terrestrial Biogeochemistry research group. This group investigates how and where greenhouse gases arise and measures their impacts at regional, national and global levels. Both local measurements and large-scale studies are used. The aim of the research is to better understand the effects of greenhouse gases on the climate and to identify strategies for effective countermeasures.

The event impressively demonstrated how important the exchange between science and society is – especially with young people, who are particularly affected by the issue of climate change.
